This vinaigrette is large and heavy. It is uniquely crafted in the shape of a pocket watch, and with Japanese aesthetic influence. The grille and the cover are in good shape, except the patina and residue. There is sign of usage underneath the grille. The top fob can not be removed. I am not sure if it is meant to be twisted open. There are dents on the fob. The only marking is on the neck of the fob: “Pat’d Jan 7 73”.
This vinaigrette came from a large collection of 18the and 19th century vinaigrettes and nutmeg graters I found in a local estate sale. The owner kindly presented prior receipts, from which I learnt that the collection was acquired from various jewelers and dealers in the last 25 years.
